Boxed up and ready to grow
31 July 2014
A North Wales market garden is set to flourish with a new van to take its fresh produce to local markets and deliver vegetable boxes to local residents.
Gardd Deudraeth, a social enterprise run by Deudraeth Cyf, received £10,000 Magnox socio-economic scheme funding to help expand the business and promote healthy living. The funding has been invested in stainless steel kitchen equipment to prepare the vegetable boxes, a fridge, delivery van and publicity materials to advertise the new venture.
The project has created jobs for six local people since it began in February 2013 and attracted over 100 volunteers to put on their gardening gloves and boots to lend a pair of hands.
The green fingered team are busy growing bedding plants, vegetables and fresh herbs in the polytunnels and will soon be harvesting spring crops produced with minimal environmental impact from harvest to plate.
Gardd Deudraeth are looking to grow the wholesale side of the business in 2014 and set up healthy eating and ‘grown your own’ produce training courses for the community.
