Ride Anglesey festival of cycling

A two week cycling festival, leading up to the Aviva Tour of Britain's first ever Stage 1 'Grand Depart' from Wales, was supported with £60,000 Magnox socio-economic scheme funding in a bid to position Anglesey as one of the UK's top cycling destinations.

Over 2,200 cyclists of all ages and abilities took part in an exciting programme of events that reached four corners of the island and traversed iconic landscapes to showcase Anglesey on an international stage.

Bike maintenance, two wheeled fancy dress, stunt displays, time trails, cyclo-cross, road cycling, educational activities and business workshops were all on offer to engage the community from event organisers Anglesey Council and outdoor adventure event specialists Always Aim High Events.

Thousands of spectators turned out to support the festival which is anticipated to deliver £1.3m economic benefit to the community.

A free resource library has also been established to lend outdoor community events marshalling kits, high-viz clothing and safety equipment as a lasting legacy.

Jonathan Jenkin, NDA Stakeholder Relations and Socio-economic Manager, commented: “The response to Ride Anglesey has been fantastic.  Each event was well supported culminating in thousands turning out to see 120 cyclists in the prestigious Tour of Britain   Grand Depart which will provide a significant boost to the local economy and help grow Anglesey as a major events destination.”
